Choir Musical Director: Stephen Davies
Stephen describes himself as a keen amateur musician who likes to get involved. He had piano and organ lessons from an early age and enjoyed playing for his own enjoyment. While in the sixth form, he wrote a spoof musical and at university was a fringe member of the Footlights Society. As a teacher Stephen was able to lend support to extra- curricular music activities of the schools he taught in, and working in church-based youth groups gave additional scope for encouraging the younger generation to be involved in music and drama. His activities included performances and productions at venues ranging from the foot of Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square, the Albert Hall and Trentham Gardens. Moving to Cheshire in 1978 to take up the post of deputy head provided more opportunities for musical activities including assisting with the senior choir, organising the school jazz group and arranging a small band for a production of ‘Oh What a Lovely War’. For twelve years Stephen also conducted the Holmes Chapel Chorus, originally a choir for parents of pupils at the school. Since retiring from teaching, he played keyboard for a short period with Wychcraft Big Band before joining the bass section of Crewe Male Voice Choir. In February 2014, he was promoted from the ranks to the enviable role as musical director of this well-established choir. Stephen is looking forward to working in partnership with Treona, the Choir’s accompanist.
